Maintaining Your Swimming Pool At A Consistent Temperature With A Heat Pump

The standard temperature for pool water is between 27 and 28°C. Any temperature exceeding 30°C affects the chemical balance of the pool water, causing the water to become corrosive and dangerous to use. Furthermore, this damages pool filtration equipment and other components. Having the pool water too hot can also create bacteria which causes the swimmers to become unwell.

Heat pumps are a great way to keep the perfect temperature. It transfers the heat from the surrounding atmosphere to the water in your pool. They use electricity to capture the heat from the warm air (powered by the sun) and don’t run on any fuel making it the perfect option if you are worried about any impact on the environment when heating up your swimming pool.

They are generally very efficient; however, their performance does rely on various factors. For example, when the season’s change and the cooler temperatures set in, the equipment will need more energy from the sun to heat your pool.

The majority of people choose a heat pump to heat their swimming pool because of the low operating costs.

How Do Heat Pumps Work?

The heat pump circulates the water through a filter and through to the heat pump heater. The pump pulls in warm air from the sun over a coil called the evaporator coil. Another coil called the refrigerant coil absorbs this heat and then results in warm gas. The warm gas is then passed through the compressor which will increase the heat.

As the unit transmits the heated gas through the heat exchanger, the gas will give up heat to the water, heating it and then flowing into your pool.

Should I Leave My Heat Pump On Overnight?

Never leave any pool heater on overnight. It’s not efficient and can be very expensive. Turning the pool heater off at night will save you money, it’s energy efficient and doesn’t defeat the purpose of heating the pool.

How Long Should My Heat Pump Run For?

Usually, a heat pump’s cycle should last from 2-3 times an hour. It should stay on for 10-20 minutes during this cycle. During colder temperatures, a heat pump will consistently run to maintain the temperature in your home.
